tarnation

August brought a change, it did
the frogs kept out of range, or hid
like all the years before
there comes a time it seems,
they are no more

hidden, slippery
out there hiding
not sitting and sunning as before
silent, evermore

it was friendly time around July
a most peaceful month for all
a net was set to discourage the heron
with plenty of room for others to come and go

our green friends’d croak when we came around
and we croaked back, a regular give and take
they’d sun with us there
we’d sit
they’d stare

and i miss them like the rain
steaming through on hot winds in July
now the weather’s still
humid and cloudy, our August sky

there are reasons
to call them seasons
on them we can rely

this makes me think not just of natural seasonal disappearnaces of frogs but the imminent extinction of many frogs, with diseases etc threatening them from all sides. Quite a sad read.

Thanks for commenting.
I read that frogs are a good indicator of the health of an environment. Thank God we have them in our backyard pond.
These frogs of ours go through the seasons with different behaviors. We've been watching them for ten years. I enjoy watching and making poems about them.
Yes, it is a sad time for the world.
The world has been changing since it's inception. The current accepted age by scientists is 4.5 billion years. A few hundred years ago or a few hundred years from now is nothing. Our span here is a dot.
Of my three hundred or so poems on this site there is a lot of bitching, worry and fun too.
Let's hope for the best, and do the best with what time and means we have.

Oh, and the frogs really are still out there in my pond, but it's not the croaking time. June and July is mating season and they croak a lot then. I just don't tell everything in my poetry. I like to have fun. I have 21 frog poems now on the blog. Take a look and enjoy.
